Affiliate Marketing Management Training
For anyone entering affiliate marketing, training has historically been and 'on the job' affair and a period working within an affiliate network was the best route for a through grounding in the industry. Certainly a great many of the leading figures in the affiliate world today cut their teeth at one or other of the networks.
With the recent growth in the application of affiliate marketing, many of the OPM agencies and online merchants are recruiting staff for affiliate manager positions. In many cases these new recruits will not be people with specific affiliate experience but more a broader 'digital marketing' background.
External Training Resources
Back in the early 2000s, there wasn't much in the way of structured training apart from the Affiliate Tip course from industry veteran, Shawn Collins. This has grown and there are now an increasing number of courses available to get a grounding in affiliate from an experienced trainer.
The benefits of using a third-party trainer are that it gives an agnostic view of the industry to the new employee - and it doesn't tie up existing team members for much of the onboarding of a new recruit.
We've assembled a list of some of the courses you may want to look at either for yourself or your new team members. We can't make any specific recommendations or give a view on any of these. It makes most sense to look at one where you know of the trainer by reputation in the industry (and more specific experience in your sector) and you'll probably get the most useful outcome!

So what are the affiliate publishers learning their craft from? Historically, for the early affiliates it was all trial and error - and second-guessing what Google was going to do. There are still elements of that and the basics remain for an affiliate to develop good traffic levels and an engaged audience. It's about finding and mastering a niche and developing the content to rise through the millions of websites in the search results for any relevant topic.
It can be interesting and useful for an affiliate manager to understand what new affiliates are learning from the various 'gurus' and '6 figure affiliate masters' as they like to style themselves. Not least for an understanding about what kind of maybe 'grey hat' techniques are being suggested.
They are very mixed in what they offer and expectations they give potential new affiliate entrants. Here are a selection that could be useful to take a look at.
- Identify your Target Market and research their online activity and profile to define the most relevant needs and problems.
Pick products and services to promote to your target audience based on the already established ground of what they really need.
Come up with list of relevant keywords to tackle those problems with keyword research for further SEO purposes.
